frequently asked questions about acupuncture

If you have any questions prior to your treatment, please don’t hesitate to call 07459 07 00 11 and discuss — I’m always happy to help you feel confident and prepared before your session. In the meantime, here are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) that may provide the answers you’re looking for:

Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people are pleasantly surprised to find that acupuncture does not hurt. The needles used are extremely thin—about the width of a human hair—so they feel nothing like the needles used for injections or blood draws.

You might feel a slight pinch, tingling, or a dull, warm sensation when the needle is inserted, which usually fades within seconds. Many people describe the feeling as deep relaxation, or a gentle heaviness or warmth around the needle site — signs that the treatment is working.

In fact, many patients find the experience so soothing that they often fall asleep during their session. If any needle ever feels uncomfortable, your practitioner can adjust or remove it immediately. Your comfort and relaxation are always the top priority.

Is acupuncture safe?
Yes. When performed by a licensed and trained practitioner, acupuncture is extremely safe. Only sterile, single-use, disposable needles are used to ensure the highest safety standards.

Charlotte is a member of the British Acupuncture Council and the Professional Standards Authority, which provides a quality mark for high standards of training, practice, and safety.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of acupuncture treatments you’ll need depends on several factors, including the nature of your condition, how long you’ve had it, your overall health, and how your body responds to treatment.

In general:

  • Acute conditions (such as a recent injury, muscle strain, or short-term pain) often respond quickly, sometimes improving noticeably after 1–3 sessions.
  • Chronic or long-standing conditions — such as arthritis, migraines, irregular menstrual cycles, digestive issues, or stress-related imbalances — typically benefit from a series of weekly treatments for around 4–6 sessions. After this initial phase, your progress will be reassessed and treatments may be spaced out as symptoms improve.
  • Preventive or wellness care can be scheduled monthly or seasonally to maintain balance and support overall health.

Most patients begin to feel improvements after their first few visits, such as better sleep, reduced pain, or a sense of calm and balance.

Charlotte will design a personalised treatment plan based upon your goals, and these will be reviewed after your first three treatments to ensure you’re on the right track. There is no pressure to book a block of treatments — with many issues, weekly sessions are initially the most effective at reducing symptoms, but we are flexible and understand the time and financial commitments involved.

What should I expect during my first visit?
Your initial appointment includes a detailed consultation about your health history, lifestyle, and goals. The initial session takes up to 1.5 hours, including your consultation and treatment.

Following sessions have a much shorter consultation time and typically last about 1 hour. Many patients leave feeling calm, balanced, and refreshed.

What should I do before and after treatment?
Before your session: Eat a light meal, stay hydrated, and avoid caffeine or alcohol.

After your session: Rest, drink plenty of water, and avoid intense exercise for a few hours to allow your body to fully absorb the treatment’s benefits.

Can I have acupuncture if I’m pregnant?
Yes! Acupuncture can be very helpful during pregnancy for issues like nausea, fatigue, and back pain. Always inform your practitioner that you are pregnant so your treatment can be safely customised for you and your baby.
Does insurance cover acupuncture?
Many insurance plans now include acupuncture coverage. It’s best to check with your provider to confirm your specific benefits.
What are the possible side effects?
Minor side effects are rare but may include slight bruising, tenderness where muscles have been released, or light-headedness after a session. Some people may also experience an emotional release, such as teariness, which is a natural part of the process and often a positive sign that the body is responding.

These effects are temporary and typically resolve quickly. Most people feel relaxed, energised, and clear-headed after treatment.

Can I combine acupuncture with other treatments?
Absolutely. Acupuncture can safely be combined with other forms of care, including chiropractic treatment, massage therapy, physical therapy, and Western medicine. It’s a great way to support your overall wellness plan.
What should I wear to an acupuncture session?
We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your arms, legs, and back. This helps your practitioner place needles comfortably and safely. Avoid tight clothing or restrictive fabrics. For sessions focusing on the back, a top that can be easily rolled up or removed is ideal.

You will be provided with blankets to cover yourself, and we can work around these blankets to access the areas we need while keeping you cosy and comfortable throughout your session.
